Teaches: Problem solving; logic
Review by: Kay Pluta

"I've heard of having school spirit, but this is ridiculous," the scared guppy sputters. Never fear, Freddi Fish and her pal, Luther, will come to the rescue of Mrs. Grouper and her classroom of guppies who are being frightened by a toy stealing phony ghost. In order to capture the ghost, the two finned friends will need to build a ghost trap. It is your child's mission to help them find the parts they need. It's not always easy. Sometimes you have to trade items with characters or figure out how to get something loose from a tight spot. And just what is a mock-stock-mibble-bock- wopper-bopper, anyway?

If you are familiar with the Freddi Fish titles, then you can imagine all the fun in store with this title. However, I will caution you that although there is much emphasis on ghosts not being real, younger sensitive players may be scared. My three-year-old won't go near the computer until we get past the opening "spooky" scenes.

This program is designed for ages 3-8, which makes it a good family choice. Each screen is loaded with funny animated clickables to amuse the youngest players. There is also a variety of side games, including the arcade style Crab Invaders, Ceiling Tiles (sliding tiles), a chalkboard drawing activity (includes letter, number, and picture stamps), and a movie theater. The Movie Theater features 16 short humorous clips including Fish Gordon and Codzilla. Most of the characters Freddi and Luther run across will also offer a lively music number as well as a clue or object to help solve the mystery.

Older players (even those over 35) will enjoy collecting things to solve the mystery. I've found this game tests your memory and sense of direction. Although you might find what you need on one screen, maybe you'll need to go to two other places to figure out how to get it loose. Therefore, it's important to know where you're going and remember where you've been. The list of items you need changes every time you play, so the game never gets boring. Also, games may be saved. This way all your clues aren't lost if your mom (or spouse) calls you to dinner. And each member of the family can play his or her own game.

If you aren't afraid of ghosts or having everybody in the household fight over the computer, Freddi Fish 2 would make a "fintastic" addition to your software library. Remember; never pass up a purple sea urchin.
